We were up and on the road at 7.30 this morning, and it was cold. 7.5 degrees as we climbed into the car. We discovered after only a couple of minutes, we had not stopped at Thackaringa Rest Stop, but instead the one before it. Thackaringa was not much further down the highway, and full of caravans. We had a much better night being on our own and not having to share facilities than we would have, as I was up and down quite a few
times in the night with a crook belly. :(
At the NSW/SA border, we all got to be in two places at once.
We pulled out the first Rangers Apprentice audiobook this morning. The boys are enthralled. I have lost count of how many times Isaiah has said he wants to be a ranger when he grows up. A few of the people and place names are a bit different to how Tim and I have been saying them in our heads as we read them, so that is likely to cause trouble when we finish the audiobook and have to read the next one aloud from our paper copy.
Cruised into Peterborough at about 10.30 and found a motorcycle museum. :) It's in an old Baptist church. Half of it is a house and the other half is the museum. The man who owns and runs it has 70 bikes and a heap of other antiques. We were the only ones there, and we got the story on lots of different pieces. We played an old record, experimented with some old medical equipment, and he even let the boys sit on some of his bikes for a photo.
Back in the car and on the road to Port Augusta we spotted a sign for a big gum tree. We had to stop and check it out. The six of us joined hands and stretched as far as we could, and made it about half way around the trunk. There was another big gum next to it that was hollow, and the kids climbed up inside it.
Added fox to the list of animals we have seen. It is hard taking pictures out of the window of a moving vehicle.
Made it to Port Augusta by 1.30 SA time and checked into the Big 4 caravan park. Unhitched and went on the hunt for hamburgers. We found a great little takeaway called Gottabe that did burgers, fish & chips and pizza, very reasonably priced, and it all tasted great too!
We enjoyed warm showers and the opportunity to wash hair and clothes today.
Tomorrow we begin the drive north, aiming for Coober Pedy.
