Day 5 - June 14

This morning, we managed to stay quiet enough to let our vey tired Levi sleep until he woke up by himself at 7.30. The children were all excited to have a real breakfast, and not have to eat in the car.

We drove into Coober Pedy at 9, and grabbed some groceries and filled up with fuel. Then we set out exploring. We visited one of the underground churches, and then went and explored Faye's underground house. Faye's is a three bedroom house dug out by hand by three women. It is now set up as a museum and has a care taker couple staying there who are from Toowoomba. They had some great tips for us for when we drive up to Kakadu.

We checked out the public noodling ground and Isaiah found a tiny piece of opal.
Then we went to Josephine's kangaroo rescue, where we got to feed some kangaroos and pat a baby joey. Toby parted with some of his spending money to buy a boomerang. Here's hoping it comes back after he throws it!

We stopped for lunch at a place called Waffles and Gems, and had pancakes with maple syrup, ice cream and bacon, and waffles with caramel and raspberry syrup, ice-cream and sprinkles.
After lunch, we went to a museum and then another underground church. Then I went back to the camper for a nap and to organise our stuff for tomorrow and Tim took the boys to the park.
There are quite a few families with children here now, and some are heading the same direction as we are, so we might see them again over the next week or two.

Tonight after dinner, we went on a tour of an opal mine and Rick, who owns the mine and camp ground we are staying in taught us all how to make ANFO sausages to blow up rocks. We had a go of divining rods to find the slides/seams of the earth and saw how opal glows under black light.
We have a bunch of very tired, dusty campers tonight.
