Day Seven - June 16

We got up close and personal with Uluru today. We bought our three day family pass  to Uluru/Kata Tjuta National Park and headed into the park at about 9 this morning and made it to the rock for the free Mala walk. Mala is the name of the creature the local group of aboriginals feel most connected to. It's a Rufus hare wallaby.
That took a significant chunk of the day, and was a lot of learning about native animals and plants, and some cultural history and ceremony. The boys did a great job listening quietly and being still for most of that.

We had planned to do the base walk after, but by the time we finished the Mala walk, it was 1.30, and the boys were hungry and Levi was quite tired from all his good behaviour.
We got back into the car and ate our packed lunches while we drove over to Kata Tjuta. It is about 50km between Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

We stopped and did the dune walk, which has a pretty good view of both landmarks. There was a native plant here that was covered in little purple flowers that smelled amazing.

We got to the valley of the winds at about 2.30 and managed to coax and cajole small boy all the way to the second lookout. The big two really wanted to do the full 7.4km loop, but there was no way little legs would have persevered that much farther. So they had to be content with the 5.4km lookout walk.

Then we drove to Walpa Gorge, and did that 2.6km walk.

We watched the sun set over Kata Tjuta and the changing colours. There were hardly any clouds today, so no spectacular sunset like yesterday for us. Hopefully a few more clouds tomorrow.
We have packed lunches tonight, and set an alarm so we can get into the park before sunrise to watch the sun come up over Uluru.
